How can we be all those things?
Well, we believe that breastfeeding our babies is an incredible gift, but that sometimes it simply doesn’t happen the way we planned.
We are not here to encourage or discourage any particular choice parents make on how to nourish their babies. We are here to support the ones who struggled or are struggling to breastfeed and are facing the guilt that often comes along with deciding to stop breastfeeding.
We have both experienced this personally, and have gone through all the guilt alone, so we wanted to start this tumblr to post encouragement and to answer your questions and concerns as you make this sometimes difficult and traumatic transition.
We want you to bottle-feed without fear of judgement, and without guilt. You are doing the best that you can do for your baby given your particular circumstances. Be assured that the love and care you take in making this sometimes agonizing decision shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that love can come in bottles, too.

Trying out the same things that failed miserably with my firstborn worked like a charm with baby #2. Every baby is different. Every family is different. There is no “right way” to mother that works for every child and every family.”

"Invented in the mid-1800s as a last-ditch option for orphans and underweight babies, packaged infant..."

““Invented in the mid-1800s as a last-ditch option for orphans and underweight babies, packaged infant formula has since been perfected to be a complete and reliable source of stress and shame for mothers.””

- Tina Fey

How to Safely Prepare Infant Formula - Niagara Region, Ontario

How to Safely Prepare Infant Formula - Niagara Region, Ontario:
art-of-waiting:

When feeding your baby formula, preparing and storing it safely is essential to stop your baby from getting sick. You must sterilize the water and all bottles and feeding equipment for babies of any age drinking powdered infant formula.

Most people don’t prepare formula correctly, and this can have disastrous results. For powdered infant formula, the water should be boiled, slightly cooled (use by 30 minutes) and formula added. The water should be no less than 70C so it can kill pathogens in the formula. However, using boiled water right away can kill certain nutrients, using it by 20-30 minutes should put it around the correct temperature Check with a thermometer.

Powdered infant formula may cause botulism, and harbour the cronobacter sazakii bacteria which can cause meningitis, bacteria in the blood, and necrotising enterocolitus. This is why adding slightly cooled, boiled water is important to kill pathogens.

I repeat: boiling water is NOT done to “only” make the water safe, it is done to make the powdered formula safe. It is a crucial step in safe formula preparation and not one to overlook.

This site lists instructions for sterilization, and preparation of different types of formula.

Is Formula Not So “Evil” After All? While typically used to describe breastfeeding, nursing is the practice of nurturing your child both physically and emotionally. And, yes, nursing absolutely can be accomplished while feeding through a bottle. You can nurse your baby through touch, trust and attention.

It Takes a Village.

It Takes a Village.:
lovecancomeinbottlestoo:

“I have no idea how we went from raising babies with your family to women who try to “one up” each other. Sure, there may be some competitive moms, and I’m sure I’ll be one. But that’s for when my kids are playing sports… where competitiveness is welcomed… not when it comes to who can raise a baby better. I really wish that women would take the time to think about how someone may be dealing before they jump down someone’s throat. I even saw a Facebook group call formula ‘poison.’ Wow. Right? Poison. You know the one that quit breastfeeding after only two weeks because you were just “too lazy” to stick with it. Nobody really knows what was going on behind the scenes – the baby that wouldn’t latch, the pumping, your baby’s constant crying, your own tears shed from trying to make things work.

Paced Bottle Feeding

Paced bottle feeding is a method of bottle feeding that is designed to mimic breastfeeding. There are many reasons families might decide to try it.

Some mothers find that when they return to work and their babies are receiving breastmilk or formula from a bottle in childcare, their babies become less interested in breastfeeding at home and some may even refuse the breast.

Many mothers also find that childcare providers are quickly going through the pumped milk they bring to childcare and end up supplementing with formula because their babies seem to want to take more milk at daycare than they can pump at work. Increasing the effectiveness of pumping sessions using hands-on pumping may help. Asking the childcare provider to use paced bottle feeding, and to offer at most 3 ounces every 2-3 hours may help as well.

A 2012 study showed that babies who are exclusively bottle fed, regardless of whether they are fed formula, breastmilk or some of each, tend to gain more weight during the first year than their exclusively at-breast fed peers. It is often easy to encourage a baby to take more milk at a feeding with a bottle than it is at the breast, and bottle feeding babies may be learning to interpret the slightly over-full feeding they get from bottle feeding as normal fullness. Paced bottle feeding may help prevent this for babies who receive many, most or all of their feedings from a bottle. - By SantaBarbaraLactation.com

Woah woah woah I wish I knew who confessed that. Me not breastfeeding doesn’t mean I’ll love my daughter any less. Moron.

This is why I envy men.

No pregnancy.
No childbirth.
And no obnoxious bitches trying to “out mum” you.

All men have to do is cuddle their babies, have a photo with them or play with them for 10 minutes and they are already dad of the year for not running off and being a twat.

If a father is left to raise his children single handedly he will have ALL the sympathy from the parents of the world because he is obviously trying his best.

Whereas as a mother everything you do get judged.

Get pregnant - have an abortion - killer
Get pregnant keep baby - drain on society
Drugs during childbirth - you’re weak.
No drugs during childbirth - you’re crazy.
C-section, intervention and inductions - why would you do that, your body has failed you.
Breast feed - but don’t do it in public or company
Formula feed - why would you do that don’t you know the benefits of breast feeding you selfish bitch.
Go back to work - how could you leave your baby
Don’t go back to work - sponger, anti feminist

And you wonder why so many women have post natal depression. Why can’t we just be praised in the same way fathers are? Just for trying our best?

So spill all the crap you want there is no such thing as a better mum.

couldn’t have said it better myself

Did you pay for a doula? How much did she charge?

Are you a doula? What’s your fee?

I loved my doula. She was 500$ for 3 pre-birth “classes” and a year of postpartum breastfeeding help. And when I couldn’t continue breastfeeding, she helped me find donor milk mommas!

lapetitemoi:

I wanted to share this photo. This is my best friend Alicia nursing her daughter (20 months old at the time), while also bottle-nursing my son donor breast milk (15 months old at the time). Alicia is the only other person (besides grandparents) who I trust to watch my son. And what else is amazing about this woman? She pumped and donated milk to my son for about 7 months as one of my son’s “milky mommas.” I wish I could give her a medal.

If you think this is awesome, please like or reblog (with the source and description), and help normalize full-term breastfeeding and milksharing.

PLEASE reblog to help normalise full-term breastfeeding and milksharing!
