How to Safely Prepare Infant Formula - Niagara Region, Ontario:

When feeding your baby formula, preparing and storing it safely is essential to stop your baby from getting sick. You must sterilize the water and all bottles and feeding equipment for babies of any age drinking powdered infant formula.

Most people don’t prepare formula correctly, and this can have disastrous results. For powdered infant formula, the water should be boiled, slightly cooled (use by 30 minutes) and formula added. The water should be no less than 70C so it can kill pathogens in the formula. However, using boiled water right away can kill certain nutrients, using it by 20-30 minutes should put it around the correct temperature Check with a thermometer.

Powdered infant formula may cause botulism, and harbour the cronobacter sazakii bacteria which can cause meningitis, bacteria in the blood, and necrotising enterocolitus. This is why adding slightly cooled, boiled water is important to kill pathogens.

I repeat: boiling water is NOT done to “only” make the water safe, it is done to make the powdered formula safe. It is a crucial step in safe formula preparation and not one to overlook.

Paced bottle feeding is a method of bottle feeding that is designed to mimic breastfeeding. There are many reasons families might decide to try it.

Some mothers find that when they return to work and their babies are receiving breastmilk or formula from a bottle in childcare, their babies become less interested in breastfeeding at home and some may even refuse the breast.

Many mothers also find that childcare providers are quickly going through the pumped milk they bring to childcare and end up supplementing with formula because their babies seem to want to take more milk at daycare than they can pump at work. Increasing the effectiveness of pumping sessions using hands-on pumping may help. Asking the childcare provider to use paced bottle feeding, and to offer at most 3 ounces every 2-3 hours may help as well.

A 2012 study showed that babies who are exclusively bottle fed, regardless of whether they are fed formula, breastmilk or some of each, tend to gain more weight during the first year than their exclusively at-breast fed peers. It is often easy to encourage a baby to take more milk at a feeding with a bottle than it is at the breast, and bottle feeding babies may be learning to interpret the slightly over-full feeding they get from bottle feeding as normal fullness. I loved my doula. She was 500$ for 3 pre-birth “classes” and a year of postpartum breastfeeding help. And when I couldn’t continue breastfeeding, she helped me find donor milk mommas!

I wanted to share this photo. This is my best friend Alicia nursing her daughter (20 months old at the time), while also bottle-nursing my son donor breast milk (15 months old at the time). Alicia is the only other person (besides grandparents) who I trust to watch my son. And what else is amazing about this woman? She pumped and donated milk to my son for about 7 months as one of my son’s “milky mommas.” I wish I could give her a medal.
